«The Odesa Medical Journal» was founded in 1926. During a few years it was highly appreciated by scientists. The works of the famous scientists had been published there. But then, at the start of 30-s, the publication of the Journal was stopped. It was renewed only in 1997, and very soon the Journal won its authority again and took a proper place among other scientific editions of the country.

The founder of “The Odesa Medical Journal” is the Odesa National Medical University publisher – Publishing House Helvetica.

The Odesa Medical Journa is included in the List of scientific professional editions of the “B” category (specialty – Medical Sciences, Subject Areas – 221 "Dentistry", 222 "Medicine", 226 "Pharmacy, Industrial Pharmacy", 228 "Pediatrics" – Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine No. 894 as of 10.10.2022, Annex 2 and Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine No. 185 as of 20.02.2023, Annex 4).

The journal is published 4 times a year.

In August 2022, the scientific publication "The Odesa Medical Journal" received a three-month scholarship from the project “Support to Ukrainian Editorial Staff”. SUES is an initiative of European institutions and organizations whose purpose is to support the scientific community of Ukraine. 

"The Odesa Medical Journal" is indexed in the scientometric database Index Copernicus International, the electronic version of the journal is included in the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine.
